Known rotary engines are of complex construction and have an unfavourable torque characteristic. Rotary engines are therefore proposed with rotationally symmetrical rotary pistons arranged concentrically with their axis of rotation, both the internal chamber of the housing and the rotary piston being respectively equipped with sealing areas for dividing the housing internal chamber into an inlet and compression area on the one hand and an expansion and exhaust area on the other, it being possible to arrange these areas in series in a multiple series circumferential direction. The compressed medium is at the same time fed to the combustion chamber by way of a precombustion chamber.
