In a belt press unit, which is preferably used as a wet press of a paper machine and in which an elastic tubular press belt revolves about a carrier body and, together with a counter roller, forms an extended pressing zone, liquid is fed to the inside of the press belt for cooling the press belt downstream of the pressing zone. This liquid is allowed to circulate with the press belt, preferably up to a point upstream of the pressing zone, where the major part thereof is removed from the press belt, cooled and then returned again to the press belt.
