NEW MATERIAL:(+) or (-)-2-Methyl-1,1'-binaphthalene-2'-carbonyl-nitrile shown by the formula I . USE:A reagent for converting an enantiomer of a hydroxyl group-containing compound into a chiral derivative. The enantiomer of a hydroxyl group-containing compound having an asymmetric carbon at the position of its bond is reacted with the reagent in the presence of an organic base to form a corresponding a diastereomer, which is subjected to chromatography, separated into (+) or (-) enantiomer, and subjected to fluorimetry. PREPARATION:A compound shown by the formula III (R and R' are 1-4C alkyl) is reduced to give a compound shown by the formula III, which is halogenated and converted into a compound shown by the formula IV (X is halogen), which is dehalogenated and subjected to ester decomposition to give a compound shown by the formula V. This compound is nitrilated to give a compound shown by the formula I , which is subjected to optical resolution in the stage shown by the formula V or formula I , to give a (+) or (-) compound shown by the formula I .
