In a machine with a bottom clamping bar (2) and a top clamping bar (5) which execute a stroke movement relative to one another, of which the bottom clamping bar (2) has a support table (3) for a workpiece (12), the said table being provided with a die (4), of which at least one has a drive unit and of which the top clamping bar (5) carries a tool (6) for working the workpiece (12), effective protection for the hands of the operating personnel is provided by arranging a protective flap (9) on the support table (3) in front of the top clamping bar (5) on the feed side, with a gap between the bottom edge (11) of the flap and the die (4), the said flap being hung on a cantilever arm (8) of the bottom clamping bar (2), being pivotable away from the top clamping bar (5) about an axis (15) of rotation extending transversely to the stroke direction (16 or 17) and being assigned a control device (10) for the drive unit or drive units which switches off these drive units when the protective flap (9) is pivoted away from the upper clamping bar (5). <IMAGE>
