The invention relates to a movable stuffing box, especially for crosshead-supported piston rods of piston pumps which pump abrasive fluids containing solids. A stuffing box of this type ensures the unrestricted automatic adjustment of the transversely or transversely and angularly movable packing bush, guaranteeing the maximum possible service life and operating reliability of the entire stuffing box. This is achieved in that the outer circumferential surface of the adjusting ring (9 or 9.2) is guided in a guide bore (2a) of an intermediate flange (2) and sealed off from a spring chamber (2e), and in that the spring chamber (2e) is connected by way of at least two scavenging ducts (2c) to the cylinder chamber (Z) of the piston pump (Figs. 2a, 2b). <IMAGE>
