The abseil device is provided with a rope drum (2) arranged on a shaft capable of being braked. So that it is automatically prepared with each abseil operation for the next abseil operation, provision is made for a second rope drum (3) to be arranged on the shaft (1) in such a way as to be fixed in terms of rotation, and for the shaft (1) to be axially and rotatably mounted in a hydraulic cylinder (60). In this arrangement, the part (8) of the shaft (1) located in the hydraulic cylinder (60) is designed as a threaded stem and is screwed through a corresponding tapped hole in a piston (10) subdividing the cylinder interior into two chambers (14, 15). The piston (10) is provided with a throttle opening for the flow of the hydraulic medium from one chamber (14 or 15) into the other, it being secured against rotation in the cylinder (60) about the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. The two chambers (14, 15) are connected to one another by a connecting line (16, 17), the passage cross-section of which can be adjusted and shut off for regulating the abseil speed. <IMAGE>
