PURPOSE:To obtain light fractions such as naphtha, light oil, etc. with preventing deterioration of catalyst, by bringing a heavy oil into contact with hydrogen in the presence of the catalyst consisting of an active component to be converted into a molten metal under a reaction condition. CONSTITUTION:A heavy oil is brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising an active component consisting of at least one selected from IIb group, IIIa group, IVa group and Va group (preferably Zn, Ga, In, Sn, or Bi) of periodic table, being converted into a molten metal under a reaction condition, usually at 10-200kg/cm<2> at 350-500 deg.C, and it is converted into a light oil.
