PURPOSE:To obtain fine MgSn(OH)6 particles having a small and uniform particle size and giving composite Mg.Sn oxide by heat treatment by reacting the hydrolyzate of an Sn compound or a soluble stannate with an Mg salt in an aqueous strong alkali soln. CONSTITUTION:The hydrolyzate of an Sn compound such as SnCl4 or Sn(SO4)2 or a soluble stannate such as Na2SnO3.3H2O or K2SnO3.3H2O is reacted with an Mg salt such as MgCl2.6H2O or MgSO4.7H2O in an aqueous strong alkali soln. of >=12.0pH to manufacture fine and uniform MgSn(OH)6 particles. When the particles are added to an electrostrictive material, a piezoelectric material or the like contg. PbTiO3 or the like as the principal component, the material can be sintered at a low temp. while inhibiting the evaporation of Pb, so a change in the composition can be reduced. Amorphous particles obtd. by heat treatment at a low temp. can be made smaller in particle size, and when the particles are added to a ferroelectric material such as BaTiO3, the diffusion proceeds rapidly and the sintering temp. can be lowered.
