New compounds having the formula 1 <IMAGE> (1) wherein W is hydrogen, halogen, n-alkyl, -NHCOR1, -COR1, or phenoxyacetylamino optionally substituted by one or two C1-12 straight- or branched chain alkyl, X is a substituent in the coupling position and is selected from hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, -SR11 or a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic residue attached at a ring nitrogen atom, and Y is a group having the formula 2 <IMAGE> (2) wherein Q is selected from the residues: -COOR4 or -CONR4R5, -OM, -NR7R8, -PO(OR9)[O]xR10 with X=0 or 1, -SO2OH, -SO2NR4R5 or CN. The groups R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, M, k and n are defined hereinafter. These compounds are used as black color couplers in photographic materials. |
