PURPOSE:To manufacture economically high quality Cu2O by reducing a waste etching soln. with raw copper to convert copper components in the soln. into CuCl, carrying out air oxidation and reduction to prepare an aqueous CuCl- NaCl soln. having a specified composition, and aging the soln. after alkali neutralization. CONSTITUTION: waste etching soln. from a stage for etching a copper plate with an aqueous CuCl2 soln. is reduced with raw copper in the presence of NaCl to convert most of the copper components in the waste etching soln. into CuCl. Hydrochloric acid is added to the resulting aqueous CuCl-NaCl soln., and a CuCl2 soln. is prepd. by air oxidation. The CuCl soln. is reduced with raw copper to obtain an aqueous CuCl-NaCl soln. having a composition contg. 50-100g/l copper, 230-280g/l NaCl and 2-10g/l free hydrochloric acid, and the soln. is neutralized with alkali so that 0-10wt% of the copper components are present as CuCl. A precipitate formed by the neutralization is aged at high temp. and pressure. High quality Cu2O free from CuO (black copper) as an impurity is manufactured economically and easily.
