I-169- (Fl-8101) A continuous process for the production of light-weight calcium sulfate which is fibrous a-type calcium sulfate hemihydrate. The product may be in the form of spherical particles formed of intertwined fibers of the fibrous a-type calcium sulfate hemihydrate. The said product is obtained by passing an aqueous slurry of calcium sulfate through a tubular reactor and injecting steam into said aqueous slurry in said tubular reactor to hydrothermally convert the feed calcium sulfate into said fibrous a-type calcium sulfate hemihydrate.
