PURPOSE:To enable smooth and quiet engagement and disengagement of a rotation power, by a method wherein, in an engine starting device, through engagement and disengagement of a friction roller with and from a friction roller on the follower side, a power is engaged and disengaged between the rotary shaft of an armature and an internal combustion engine. CONSTITUTION:With an electromagnetic coil 46 excited, a shift lever 37 cam- engaged with a moving core 45 is rotated, a travelling ring 36 is moved over an armature shaft 18 to press a brim part 30a of a friction roller 30 for deflection, and an outer pripheral surface 30b thereof is forced into contact with an outer peripheral surface 40a of a fly wheel 40 and a backup roller 41. Thereafter, the moving core 45 and a moving contact device 47 are forced into contact with fixed contacts 48, 48 to drive a d.c. motor 14. This transfers the rotation force of the armature shaft 18 to the friction roller 30 and further to the fly wheel 40 through a spline 29 to start an engine. After starting, by releasing the electromagnetic coil 46 from excitation, the d.c. motor 14 is brought to a stop, the friction roller 30 is released from deflection and is restored to its original shape, resulting in disconnection of power transfer. |
