PURPOSE:To prepare a free water-soluble macromolecular acid with a high yield ratio, by dividing an electrodialysis tank into a plurality of cells with cation-exchange membranes, and alternatively supplying the salt of said water- soluble macromolecular acid and a strong acid to adjacent cells. CONSTITUTION:An electrodialysis tank is alternatively separated into chambers 4 for a strong acid and chambers 5 for the salt of a macromolecular acid with cation-exchange membranes 1. A strong acid is supplied from a circulating tank 6 to the chambers 4 for a strong acid, while the salt of a macromolecular acid is supplied from a circulating tank 7 to the chambers 5 for the salt of a macromolecular acid. In the anodic and cathodic chambers 2 and 3, the strong acid is used as a liquid electrolyte. The salt of a macromolecular acid to be used therein is a macromolecular compound having an acid group, e.g. a carboxylic, phosphoric or sulfuric one, partially or entirely converted into a salt in its molecule,while the strong aicd may be sulfuric, nitric, etc. By applying DC to this electrodialysis tank, cations permeate through the cation-exchange membranes 1 and transfer to the adjacent chambers, while anions reside as such. Hence, the formation of the macromolecular acid is continued in the chambers for the salt of a macromolecular acid.
