PURPOSE:To obtain a water absorbing material capable of absorbing a large amt. of water by swelling and expanding instantaneously when it is immersed in water by compression molding a polyvinyl acetal porous elastic body at a specified compressibility in dry hardened condition at almost room temp. CONSTITUTION:A polyvinyl acetal porous elastic body is compression molded at 60-95% compressibility in dry hardened condition at almost room temp. The obtd. water absorbing material is swelled and expanded instantaneously and absorbs a large amt. of water when it is immersed in water or liquid, emulsion or dispersion consisting primarily of water. For example, the material is quickly swelled and expanded by immersing it in water and absorbs 200-2,500% water basing on the volume of the compression molded body at the same time. The time required therefor was <=90sec for all cases.
