PURPOSE:To obtain a filter medium for water treatment having high performance by forming a mixed layer of at least gamma-MnO2 such as electrolyzed manganese dioxide or the like and beta-MnO2 such as the resultant product of thermal decomposition of a manganese salt or the like on the surface of a carrier such as zeolite. CONSTITUTION:A slurry formed by dispersing gamma-MnO2 powder in a thermally decomposable manganese salt soln. is deposited on a carrier selected from the group consisting of zeolite, natural sand, biscuit pieces, quick filter sand, etc. The carrier is then placed under a high temp. atmosphere to decompose thermally said slurry, by which a filter medium for water treatment having a mixed layer of gamma-MnO2 and beta-MnO2 on the surface of the carrier is obtd. Said filter medium has the layer dispersed uniformly with the fine powder gamma-MnO2 in the beta-MnO2 matrix on the carrier. The gamma-MnO2 has a high oxidation potential and a large specific surface area. Therefore said filter medium has the excellent power to remove iron, manganese and humin.
