Portable label applicator machine, for applying labels to articles, especially precise labels on which clear and precise information has previously been printed, such as bar codes. The label applicator machine has a label cartridge or "cassette". The label cassette can be removed and replaced as a unit assembly on the label applicator machine. The label cassette is a complete unit, with a support part or section for supporting a strip of labels in the form of a roll, a detaching part or section for detaching labels, and a guide section for guiding a backing paper which forms part of the label strip; and an applicator device which holds the label cassette in a removable or detachable manner and is provided with an autonomous conveyor mechanism in order to move the backing paper and an application section for applying the detached labels to the articles. With a single label applicator machine it is possible to use a plurality of cassettes or cartridges loaded with pre- printed bar-code labels.
