PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material of perfumery and amino acid, etc., in high selectivity and purity, in one step, from an aniline compound and ethylene oxide which are available at a low cost, by reacting the raw materials in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An indole compound is obtained by reacting an aniline compound such as aniline, o-toluidine, p-anisidine, etc. with ethylene oxide in the presence of a catalyst preferably in gaseous phase, optionally using a diluent such as H2 gas, at 200-500 deg.C under positive, atmospheric or negative pressure. The catalyst is those containing one or more substances selected from VIII-group metals and I b-group metals of the periodic table, zinc salts, cadmium salts, magnesium salts, magnesium oxide and activated carbon, e.g. Ru/C, Pd/C, Pd/ CaCO3, ZnCl2/CaCl2, etc. Addition of water or steam to the reaction system improves the life and activity of the catalyst and the yield of indole. |
