An alpha -haloacetophenone derivative of the formula II, in which R<1> denotes a hydroxy protective group and X denotes halogen, and a 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine derivative of the formula III, in which R<2> denotes an amino protective group, are condensed. The alpha -(3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamino)acetophenone derivative obtained is catalytically hydrogenated either directly, or after reaction by treatment with a reducing agent, to give an alpha -(3,4-dimethoxyphenethyl-aminomethyl)benzyl alcohol derivative. The benzyl alcohol derivatives of the formula I obtained show outstanding hypoglycaemic and cardiotonic activity. <IMAGE>
