Fuel/air mixture enters the internal combustion engine (1) via the inlet manifold (2). The combustion products are fed to a coagulator (5) which forms the soot solids into larger particles. The soot particles enter a centrifugal separator where they fall and are stored in the bottom (8). The now cleaner exhaust gases enter the customary exhaust system (3). A second air inlet (38) connected to the inlet manifold allows air to be drawn across the soot particles under control of an electronically signalled valve (10,12). This metered soot/air mixture is fed back to the engine to be reburnt. |
