PYROELECTRIC DEVICE

A pyroelectric device comprising a pyroelectric thermometer (1) e.g. in the form of a tube or a bowl, and which thermometer is in operative contact with a relatively thick mass of catalytic material (5). The device can be used as a gas detector by selecting a catalytic material which is capable of bringing about chemical reaction of the gas to be detected with resultant change in temperature. A particular application is its use as a personal carbon monoxide dosimeter. The device may also be used as a detector based on biological reactions e.g. in the detection of urea using the immobilised enzyme urease as catalyst.
