The method and the device for operating a hydraulic lift having a pump, preferably driven by an electric motor, and a fluid reservoir is to be improved in such a way that the potential energy released during the downward travel of the lift is recovered and made available again during upward travel. For this purpose, the invention proposes that the potential energy of the empty lift released during downward travel is stored by passing the hydraulic fluid forced out of the lifting cylinder into a hydropneumatic accumulator or into a pressure-tight fluid reservoir containing a preloaded gas cushion and is re-used for the upward travel of the lift by feeding the hydraulic fluid out of the accumulator or the fluid reservoir to the suction side of the pump.
