In a hydraulic excavator, the movement of the tool linked to the arm is controlled by appropriate loading of the hydraulic cylinders of the boom, the arm and the tool. So that the tool can be guided in a simple manner along a predetermined line, the control valves of the piston-cylinder units are controlled by a mechanical or electrical control device in such a way that, if the tool crosses a predetermined limit-movement line, they shut off the piston-cylinder units in the direction of a movement crossing the limit-movement line.
