A master cylinder (14) of the kind comprising two aligned pistons (24, 26) defining a pair of pressure chambers (28, 30) in fluid communication with respective brake circuits (36, 38) as well as with a fluid reservoir (16), and further comprising an auxiliary pressure chamber (48) in which fluid is pressurized upon initiation of a brake application and is first communicated to one (28) of said pressure chambers through a check valve (54) as long as a predetermined pressure level is not reached and then vented to the fluid reservoir (16), through a relief and replenish valve assembly (70). Accordingly the auxiliary pressure chamber (48) is formed within one (26) of the pistons and is closed by a wall member (46) which is held in fixed relationship with respect to the housing (15) and which sealingly projects into said piston (26) to pressurize fluid therein when the latter moves upon a brake application.
