PURPOSE:To simplify data processing after the input of a picture by arranging an annular illumination means on a horizontal plane around an object to be recognized and also arranging an illumination means on the upper position of the object to image pick up said object by the illumination. CONSTITUTION:The illumination apparatuses 3-1-3-3 and 4-1-4-3 are lights for picture input in the X and Y directions of a rectangular parallelepiped object respectively. These illumination apparatuses are arranged annularly. A picture is inputted by using an ITV camera 2. The setting position is fixed on a position where the shape of the object can be grasped and light from the illumination apparatuses is not made incident directly. In order to obtain the information of the X direction of the picture, only the illumination apparatuses 3-1-3-3 are turned on and the picture is inputted from the camera 2. Since the incident picture is lighted up only at the surface vertical to the X axis, the surface can be separated simply. The information of the Y direction can be inputted in the same manner to simplify the succeeding picture processing. In the Z direction also, the picture can be inputted in the same manner by arranging the illumination apparatuses on the upper position of the object.
