In this control device for target positioning in machine tools, a spindle (1), for a tool exchange, is to be brought into a predetermined target position. During a first mode of operation, "speed control", the spindle speed is in this connection lowered to such a low initial value that the stopping of the spindle in the target position during the subsequent second mode of operation, "positional control", is possible within a single spindle rotation. To detect the position of the spindle (1), a pulse generator (5) is provided on the spindle centre line, which delivers generator pulses (P) and a reset pulse per rotation to a pulse counter (7). In order to make possible an adaptation of the counter control to the pulse generator (5) with optional increment number (N) per rotation, the counter (7), in the "speed control" mode of operation after reaching the counter state zero, is not set to its maximum value but to a value corresponding to the increment number (N) of the pulse generator (5) and counts down subsequently. The target position is defined as the increment difference (Z) between the zero mark of the pulse generator (5) and the target in such a manner that, on the appearance of the zero pulse, the increment difference (Z) is in the counter (7) and the counter content is exactly zero on reaching the target position. <IMAGE>
