A reactor core 2 is supported by a core support 3 in a reactor vessel 1. Sodium in a first sodium chamber 4 is introduced into a high-pressure plenum 6 by a pump 23. Sodium in the high-pressure plenum 6 passes through the reactor core receiving heat from the reactor core, and enters a third sodium chamber 8. To reduce the temperature and thermal stress of the support 3, the sodium in the high-pressure plenum is also introduced into a second sodium chamber 10 which is arranged between the first sodium chamber 4 and the third sodium chamber 8 so as to cool the core support. A heat exchanger cools the sodium in the third sodium chamber 8.
