PURPOSE:To isolate the titled compound useful as an optical resolving agent for amino acids in high purity, by reacting a racemic modification of an alpha-phenylpropanesulfonic acid with an optically active alpha-amino acid, and utilizing the solubility difference of the resultant diastereomer salts. CONSTITUTION:A racemic modification of alpha-phenylpropanesulfonic acid is reacted with an optically active alpha-amino acid, and the solubility difference of the resultant two diastereomer salts is utilized to separate a salt of the optically active alpha-phenylpropanesulfonic acid with the optically active alpha-amino acid which is a slightly soluble diastereomer salt of one thereof. The above-mentioned salt is then resolved to afford the aimed optically active alpha-phenylpropanesulfonic acid or an optically active alpha-amino acid salt thereof. The above-mentioned optically active sulfonic acid is reacted with a DL-alpha-amino acid, and the solubility difference of the resultant two diastereomer salts can be utilized to give the optically active alpha-amino acid.
