PURPOSE:Crude tellurium containing impurities is made into shots, melted in a nonreductive atmosphere to allow scums to float thoroughly, then solidified by cooling to remove the scums, thus enabling simple and inexpensive purification of tellurium. CONSTITUTION:Crude tellurium, as starting substance, including impurities such as Cu, Pb and the like, is melted and the melt is poured dropwise into water to form shots 0f 1-5mm. diameter with surfaces oxidized appropriately. Then, the resultant shots of tellurium are melted in a temperature range from the melting point of Te to that of TeO2, preferably from 500-650 deg.C and kept for a certain time to allow scum mainly composed of TeO2 and other impurities to flow on the surface. The melting state cited above is carried out in an inert gas or air atmosphere for about 0.5-10hr. Then, the melt and the scum are solidified by cooling, then the scum is removed by physical methods to give the objective purified Te.
