NEW MATERIAL:The acetophenone derivative of formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy), i.e. 4-[trans-4-(trans-4-substituted cyclohexyl)cyclohexyl]-2-fluoroacetophenone. EXAMPLE:4-[trans-4-( trans-4-Propylcyclohexyl )cyclohexyl]-2-fluoroacetophenone. USE:Useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition. It exhibits nematic liquid crystal phase between 90 deg.C and 200 deg.C, and has low viscosity (about 32cp at 20 deg.C). Accordingly, it is effective as a component constituting a liquid crystal composition exhibiting a liquid crystal phase over a wide temperature range and having low viscosity. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting acetyl chloride with 3-[trans-4-(trans-4-substituted cyclohexyl)cyclohexyl]fluorobenzene in carbon disulfide in the presence of aluminum chloride.
