PURPOSE:To carry out the reaction of phenol with ketone using a stirring-tank reactor, continuously for a long period, without producing by-products, by placing a clearing zone to the upper layer of the suspension zone containing cation exchange resin catalyst in dispersed state, thereby separating the catalyst from the reaction liquid effectively. CONSTITUTION:Ketone and phenol are supplied at a ratio of 2-20 (phenol/ ketone) continuously through the feed pipe 2 to a stirring tank reactor furnished with the external cooling jacket 3, the stirring blades 4 in the suspension zone A containing cation exchange resin catalyst in dispersed state, and a clearing zone B having a depth of >=10%, preferably 20-80% based on that of the suspension zone and positioned above the suspension zone A. The reaction is carried out essentially only in the suspension zone under controlled stirring condition to form the above two layers. The objective compound is extracted continuously from the outlet 2 of the clearing zone B maintained essentially to a resin-free state. EFFECT:The removal of heat from the reaction zone can be carried out easily.
