An improved process for preparing a di-(C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>3</Sub>)-alkyl propanediimidate dihydrohalide by reacting malononitrile, a C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>3</Sub> alcohol, and hydrogen halide, wherein the improvement comprises conducting the reaction under greater than atmospheric pressure in a halobenzene, haloalkylbenzene or alkylbenzene solvent having a boiling point in the range of about 100 to 200°C at atmospheric pressure.
