A safety device for retaining an animal in place in a vehicle comprises a collar or harness for attachment to the animal, a lead which can be secured to the collar or harness and a retainer releasably securable to the lead and comprising a seat buckle component which is readily engageable in a complimentary buckle component of a seat belt secured to the vehicle.
