PURPOSE:To provide a sludge treating agent which has excellent oil/water separating ability and is effective even at a low temperature, consisting of an ester of an alkylene oxide adduct of a hydroxyl group-containing glyceride with a polyvalent carboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:An alkylene oxide adduct of glyceride is prepared by adding 3- 40mol of 2-8C alkylene oxide (e.g. ethylene oxide) to 1mol of glyceride having at least one hydroxyl group (e.g. castor oil). The adduct is made to react with a polyvalent carboxylic acid (e.g. phthalic anhydride) in the molar ratio of 1/ 0.3-1.5 in the presence of an esterification catalyst and then an anionic, nonionic or cationic surfactant and an aliphatic, aromatic or alicyclic solvent (e.g. n-hexane) are added to the resultant ester to obtain the aimed sludge treating agent. The agent is added to sludge in an amount of 400-1,000ppm by solid.
