A raised level of waste, such as 30 per cent, is taken from the coarse-sorted fibre suspension, from the initial sorting stage from the grinder. This waste half-stuff fraction is treated to separate out splinters and chips with a length of more than 4mm, preferably longer than 8mm, to give a waste fraction to be reduced to fibres and returned to the initial mesh sorting stage. Usable material from the separation is passed to a second separation stage to give two fractions. The first fraction, containing at least 80 per cent fibres, is retained by the Bauer McNett (RTM) sorter using 59 meshes/cm, for the water to be extracted and removed for special applications. The second fraction, containing 15-60 per cent fibres, passes through the same sorter to be mixed with the usable material from the initial mesh sorting section.
