PURPOSE:To obtain industrially and advantageously a 1-phenyl-2-alkoxyalkene useful as an intermediate for various agricultural chemicals, perfumes and medicines, by reacting a benzyl alkyl ketone with an alcohol in the presence of an acid and dehydrating agent. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (X-Z are H, OH, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxyl; any two of X-Z together with part of the benzene ring may form a 5--7-membered heterocyclic ring containing 1-2 oxygen atoms; R is lower alkyl) is reacted with an alcohol, e.g. a 1-6C aliphatic alcohol, in the presence of a sulfonic acid, e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid, or a mineral acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, and a dehydrating agent, e.g. acetone dimethyl acetal, orthoformate or acetic anhydride, to give advantageously the aimed compound of formula II (R' is alkyl residue of the alcohol used for the reaction). |
