The subjects of the invention are an N-methylchloroacetanilide derivative and a herbicidal composition containing such a derivative. It corresponds to the formula: <IMAGE> in which R represents an alkyl, allyl, propargyl, alkoxyaryl or tetrahydrofurylmethyl radical, an alkyl group substituted by a halogen atom or a cycloalkyl group optionally substituted by an alkyl radical. Treatment of the soil and foliage in order to protect various crops and especially rice fields against weeds.
