The fitted protective sealing lip has the function of sealing the damage which in most cases is almost invisible even at the fitting stage and is often also unavoidable. In this regard it is important to know that the bead zone, which, for reasons including static considerations, is necessarily very strong and rigid in construction, contains the end and start zone of the carcass layer in its core. If during fitting hair cracks occur in the area of the bead inner zone (part of the tyre within the rim/rim flange) on account of an incorrectly placed fitting tool, these hair cracks are enlarged on account of the widely different effects. These effects may be low air pressure, heavy loading but also a certain existing storage (ageing of the rubber tyre). Since at present all tyres are pressurised with moist, that is to say water-containing, air (nitrogen tests are underway for petrol vehicles etc.), this water tries to move outwards, partly caused by centrifugal forces. In this case the water (air humidity) in the hair cracks migrates within the bead rubber to the reverse layer, to the carcass reverse layer to the bead core and along the carcass layer. The possibility of migration comes from the fact that the steel fabrics are only covered (although at high temperature) with tread strips, but cannot become homogenous with the rubber.
