A method is proposed which is used for the high-frequency transmission of data telegrams between a central unit (Z) and a plurality of subscriber modems (TM1). The central unit comprises a central computer (ZR) and a central modem (ZM) connected thereto which is connected via a high-frequency cable network (KN) to the individual subscriber modems. To set the required transmission power of a transmitting component (S2) of a newly installed subscriber modem (TM2), the central unit transmits to the subscriber modem a special enquiry data telegram by means of which, inter alia, the transmission power of the modem is increased by one step and a reply data telegram is transmitted to the central unit. With each further enquiry data telegram of the central unit, the step-by-step increase of the transmission power is continued until the central unit is able to evaluate the reply data telegram. The central unit then transmits a normal enquiry data telegram to the subscriber modem concerned, whereby the further increase of the transmission power is terminated. <IMAGE>
