The invention relates to an appliance for forming a heap lying on the ground for crops, especially field fodder, by means of a conveying and pressing device, a hood-shaped form box 11 (Fig. 7) and a closing device in the form of a wedge pallet 4 for the feed orifice of the form box 11. The wedge pallet 4 has to be brought from the initial position A, after the filling of the form box 11, into the closing position B and thereafter into the transport position C. After the frame 1 has been lowered on to the ground, the wedge pallet 4 is drawn from under the form box 11 and brought into the position D. According to the proposal of the invention, these operations can be carried out by means of a central lever mechanism or a chain drive. An endless chain 23 is so guided by way of chain wheels 24, 25, 26 and 27 that the wedge pallet 4 articulated on it is brought into the respective position. The lever mechanism and the chain drive perform further functions, such as the raising of the form box 11 and the lowering and raising of the frame 1. The drive can be carried out by the shaft 30 of the pressing device by way of a chain 31. <IMAGE>
