A reduction in the dissolving times in the production of polyacrylic spinning solutions is achieved if the polymer powder is loosened up by inert gas to a bulk density of 0.12 to 0.18 g/cm<3>, allowed to fall via a metering apparatus through a vertical shaft, in which the polymer powder is sprayed with at least a part of the solvent from jets mounted at the side. The apparatus used therefor, comprising hoppers and metering apparatuses for the polymer powder and the solvent, a dissolving screw and a dissolving tank, is characterised in that an aeration bottom (4) is provided at the bottom of the polymer powder hopper (1), the hopper (1) opens into a star wheel feeder (12) and subsequently into a vertical shaft (13) which is provided with jets (10), for spraying in the solvent, in the lower third, but at least 1/8th of the length of the shaft away from the dissolving screw, and is provided with orifices (9) in the upper third through which solvent passes for rinsing the wall of the shaft. <IMAGE>
