PURPOSE:To simultaneously perform the reductions in size and thickness and the increase in the accuracy of a stepping motor by forming stator pole teeth to be excited in polyphase substantially concentrically through a narrow magnetic path in the same plane, and oppositely disposing rotor pole teeth through an air gap. CONSTITUTION:Magnetic paths 52, 53 of a stepping motor are alternately formed in different directions. Since the magnetic resistances of narrow magnetic paths 26-29 are so large as to readily saturate, the paths 52, 53 are formed through cores 22, 24. Exciting coils 23, 25 are excited to sequentially alter the direction of a magnetic field, and a rotor rotates at the prescribed pitch at every exciting time.
