PURPOSE:To compress both processing time and storage location necessary for the processing and facilitate character recognition by extracting a stroke by using vector information on the peripheral line of a given character pattern. CONSTITUTION:Unit vectors constituting a peripheral line of a character pattern are stored in the vector group memory VGM of a homogeneity deciding circuit 300 and processed by an adder AD, registers L and LO, and comparing circuit LCP to extract an adjacent vector. Further, the angles of the coordinate axes of the vectors are calculated by a register IP and an angle calculator AP and a comparing circuit CP outputs the angle difference, which is ANDed with the output of the circuit LCP. The adjacent vectors from this circuit 300 are stored in the 1st and the 2nd VGMs of response deciding circuit as a set of partial peripheral vectors in the direction of vector propagation. Then, they are processed by a register, center line calculating circuit, common shadow calculating circuit, etc., and the strokes are extracted by using vector information on the peripheral line.
