PURPOSE:To permit measurement of the rotational angle of a rotating object even if its turning force is weak, by providing a plate cam of a predetermined shape in such a manner that its plane is orthogonal to the axis of rotation of a rotating object, and disposing a non-contact displacement meter in opposing relation to the side surface of the cam. CONSTITUTION:A plate cam 2 is disposed in such a manner that its plane is orthogonal to the axis P of rotation of a rotating object 1. The radius vector of the cam 2 monotonously increases with the angle defined with respect to a point A in the counterclockwise direction. The starting point A and an end point B are tied together in a straight line. Assuming now that the rotating object 1 rotates clockwise and the rotational angle of the object 1 is 0 when a non- contact displacement meter provided in opposing relation to the side surface 2A of the cam 2 directly opposes the point A, the distance H between the side surface 2A of the cam 2 and the displacement meter 3 linearly decreases with the rotational angle theta by (l2-l1)theta/360. Therefore, any rotational angle of the rotating object 1 can be obtained from the output of the displacement meter 3. Since the measurement is effected in a non-contact manner, it is possible to measure the rotational angle of the object 1 even if its turning force is weak.
