PURPOSE:To reduce the load on an operator by calculating the coefficient of correlation or a relative distance, and updating a dictionary partially automatically. CONSTITUTION:Data on the number and order of a stroke, etc., are extracted from a handwritten letter by an input device 1 and recorded on a magnetic tape 2. The recorded raw data is converted into dictionary format data by a dictionary format converting circuit 3. Only this dictionary format data is collated with the contents of a dictionary registration table 5, and when this letter is not registered, that is displayed 8 to inquire of the operator whether the letter is registered in a dictionary file 7. When there is a dictionary registered in the dictionary file 7, a correlation coefficient calculating circuit 6 calculates the coefficient of correlation between the dictionary and letter data; when the value is larger than the permissible values of respective dictionaries, a weighted mean is calculated automatically by a weighted mean calculating circuit 4 and sent to the file 7, updating the old dictionary. When the coefficient of correlation is not within the range of the permissible values, the operator performs adequate processing.
