PURPOSE:To set priority above correcting capability and to prevent error correction from becoming impossible by using error track pointers for the error correction according to priority set by a priority setting means when there are error track pointers more than correctable tracks. CONSTITUTION:Flip-flops FF1, FF2, FF3, and FF4, and AND circuits 5 and OR circuits 6 are provided by as many as tracks. A PROM7 counts error track pointers inputted from the tracks according to its stored program, and FFs 4 are set at the time of a GCR recording system when the number of error track pointers exceeds three. Therefore, none of AND circuits 5 turns on and the number of phase error pointers is limited to <=2. The PROM7 sets the FFs 4 above two at the time of a PE recording system and the number of phase error pointers is limited to <=1. Further, the PROM7 gives an ECC circuit 8 priority according to track numbers, and error track pointers are sent out in the order of, for example, 9 and 1, 8 and 2, and 8 and 7 from both sides of a magnetic tape, making error corrections. |
