The natural supply of vitamin D3 depends on the conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol to vitamin D3 in the skin by ultraviolet light. Vitamin D3 is then converted to calcitriol in a two-step process in the liver and kidney before it acts on its target tissue. 1.alpha.,25-Dihydroxycholecalciferol is represented by the formula: The compound has a molecular weight of 416.647, a molecular formula of C27H44O3, is soluble in organic solvents and practically insoluble in water.</p> |
