<p>PURPOSE:To prepare 1,3-dihydroxyacetone useful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals, detergents, cosmetics, etc., in high selectivity, by the addition reaction of formaldehyde in an ether solvent using a specific compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is prepared by the addition reaction of formaldehyde such as paraformaldehyde, formalin, etc. in an ether solvent under heating for 6hr in the presence of a catalyst comprising an N-substituted thiazolium salt, e.g. a halide of N-alkyl thiazolium or N-alkyl benzothiazolium, etc., or a combination of the above salt and an organic tertiary amine such as triethylamine, pyridine, etc., or an inorganic base such as alcoholate, organic acid salt, etc. of an alkali or alkaline earth metal. The ether solvent is e.g. dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, diethyl ether, etc., which may be mixed with a solvent such as trichloroethylene, propanol, etc.</p> |
