Piperidine deriv. of formula (I) is made by reacting an iso-nipecotate of alcohol of formula (II), (in which R is 1-4C alkyl), with a halogenated deriv. of formula (III), (in which X is Cl or Br). - This is followed by treatment with an alkali borohydride in methanol or ethanol at 0-10 deg. C and reaction with excess phenyl magnesium chloride or bromide.
