PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material substance for cephalosporins having antibacterial action easily in high yield, by reacting 7- amino-3-acetoxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid with a lower alcohol in the presence of a sulfonic acid. CONSTITUTION:7-Amino-3-acetoxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid shwon by the formula I or its salt is reacted with a lower alcohol in the presence of a sulfonic acid (e.g., methanesulfonic acid, phenoxysulfonic acid, etc.) (preferably equimolar amount - 20 times molar amount based on the compound shown by the formula I ) preferably at -30-80 deg.C, to give a compound shown by the formula II(R is lower alkyl) or its salt.
