A power controller is proposed, especially for electrical hotplates, which supplies the electrical AC power in individual power pulses of continuously variable relative switched-on duration to the load (70) (hotplate). The power is pulsed by means of a snap-action switch (27) which is operated by a bimetallic device (39). The heating of the bimetallic device is dimensioned to be relatively larger, but is operated only in the lower setting range of the power controller with the full parallel voltage to the load (70) when the switch (61) is closed. In the upper power range, a diode (62) is connected upstream of the bimetallic device heater, so that it can be regulated down to half power without losses. This makes it possible to control the lower control range accurately. <IMAGE>
